Tips To Prevent Hair Loss While Combing & Styling

Bad hair care habits can lead to hair loss and breakage. Here are a few changes that you should make to your routine.

  • Do not brush or comb your hair excessively. Only comb you hair to style it and do so gently.
  • Use a wide-tooth comb or high quality brush.
  • Avoid pulling and tugging on your hair. Remove tangles gently. Start at the bottom of the hair strands and work your way up towards the scalp to comb out knots and tangles.
  • If you wear your hair in a pony tail, wear hair loosely pulled back. Do not pull hair tightly as the traction can cause hair loss and breakage. Use thick hair ties made especially for styling hair.

Split Ends

The day-to-day wear and tear our hair experiences is enough to cause visible damage over time.The ends of your hair are also the oldest section of the shaft, at any given time. As these ends age, they will typically grow weaker and more prone to damage or splitting. As the protective layer of your ends is lost, they’ll soon begin to split, leaving the inner cortex of your hair exposed.

Factors can contribute to split ends or breakage include:

  • Heat treatments, such as curling wands or hair straighteners
  • Chemical processing (dying, bleaching, perming, etc.)
  • Brushing or combing your hair too forcefully

Unfortunately, it isn’t actually possible to repair split ends. Once the hair has split, this isn’t something that can be undone — although, split end sealants can help prevent split ends from worsening, the only way to truly eliminate split ends is to cut them off.

Split End Prevention

  • Treat Your Wet Hair Gently – Whenever your hair is wet, it is vulnerable to damage.  If wet hair is stretched by over 30% its initial length, then it will be damaged.  Rubbing wet hair with a towel can damage the cuticles of your hair. This can also lead to frizziness. Try blotting your hair dry, rather than rubbing it. This is far less damaging to wet hair.
  • Keep Your Hair Hydrated – Not only should you be keeping yourself hydrated, but also, you should keep your hair hydrated. Try using moisturizing products, such a good leave-in conditioner and split end sealant.
  • Air-dry your hair whenever possible. Limit the use of blow drying and hot combs/flat irons. Avoid high heat settings.

Tips to Prevent Hair Loss & Damage From Weaves and Braids:

  • Have your weave done only by an experienced professional.
  • Avoid very heavy braids and extensions. Excessive traction can lead to hair breakage and hair loss.
  • Make sure your natural hair is not pulled too tight. Traction on the follicles can lead to permanent damage to the follicles and permanent hair loss (traction alopecia).
  • Take periodic breaks from extensions.
  • Keep the scalp and hair well cleaned and conditioned.
  • Consider a scalp serum to support scalp health and hair growth.
